Ooze Out Update: Feel the Solstice

September 23, 2008 by onair

The Lodge

There have been a lot of inquiries about what effect WPVM’s changing management and changing relationship to MAIN will have on the Ooze Out Program’s extensive travel budget. Do not be concerned. Before moving forward on their paths, both parties made sure that the Ooze Out Program could go where we need to go (Thanks Jason!, Thanks Wally!). As a result of these efforts and generous grant from our sister station WPVJ(apan), we will be broadcasting live from Transylvania County NC in honor of the Fall Solstice and All Hallows Eve, for the entire month of October. That’s right, we will be broadcasting analog from a secret location . Tonight we are securing the last of the special broadcast equiptment, a series of cardboard tubes, webs and jems, at the lodge. While we’re away you can enjoy an encore broadcast of our August 19th 2008 episode filled with heavy underground tape sessions. This show features Byron Browne, Ooze Out correspondent for the Five Points region of Asheville. Hear more from Byron and meet the newest member of the Ooze family, Shaggy the Ooze Out Intern, during our month long Ooze Out Halloween Party, filled with surprises and spooky underground sounds.

My very best to you,

Peter H. Poffenberger

Veronika will interview Veronica Butcher about green jobs in WNC.  Check out the local Green Jobs Now! here.

Local author Mike Hopping will walk us through the details of the monstrous federal bailout of Wall Street currently being discussed in Congress. $1 trillion seems to be the low-ball estimate at this point, more than has been spent on the war/occupation of Iraq. Check out an interesting article in Harpers magazine here.

Read the draft bill here.

Barry and David will muse on the Polls, the economic Picture, and the many foreign Policy successes of the Bush Administration, and how they can all be looked at as one Pile of…well, you get the idea.

This local news and public affairs show focuses on underreported information and encourages civic activism. Tune in live 7-8 pm Monday, catch the 1 pm Tuesday rebroadcast, or stream or podcast.

We’ll talk to David Earnhardt, the director of the new film, Uncounted. He will be attending a special screening at the Fine Arts Theater this Thursday night at 7 pm. Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections looks at how fraud may have changed the outcome of the 2004 election, the 2006 elections, and may affect the 2008 election. Check out www.uncountedthemovie.com

Veronika will talk to Ron Ainspan, about the I-26 Connector. The NC Dept. of Transportation is holding a hearing on the connector this Tuesday the 16th at 7 pm, at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Asheville. Click here for info about the hearing. Ron has been working on the issue for the past decade; go to www.i26group.org for more info.

We’ll talk a little about the changes going on at WPVM. The Mountain Area Information Network’s Board of Directors agreed to give the volunteers more authority over things around here; it’s an exciting time. Thanks for all your support and interest.

September 14, 2008 by onair

This past week’s show is available on the archives page. In the second hour we we telephoned experimental musician Heath Moerland aka Sick Lama founder of the fag tapes cassette label. Heath performed at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit last Saturday with his reeds and electronics duet Slither, as part of  MOCAD’s STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL MUSIC II . Hear him talk about Dolphins, Alaska, Graveyards, Emeralds and listen to a mix tape he sent us (yes, actual cassette) of his favorite Rock, Pop and Dub albums.

The Republican National Convention in St. Paul is over, but the repercussions from the outrageous police crackdown on dissent and on journalists is just getting started. Asheville filmmaker Rebecca MacNeice was in the thick of it, and she’ll give us an eyewitness account.

“Jesus was a community organizer, but Pontious Pilate was a Governor.” David will walk us through an in-depth look at the Republican nominee for Vice-President, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Finally, there has been some discussion in the local media about controversy here at WPVM. The Mountain Area Information Network(MAIN) holds WPVM’s broadcast license. MAIN’s Board of Directors is meeting during our show tonight; we hope to have some news to relay to our listeners about WPVM’s future. No promises, though. Ignore all rumors. Fight the power. Jump up & down. Stand on one foot. More later…

Veterans’ Voices for September 3rd, 2008

September 2, 2008 by onair

This week on Veterans’ Voices we talk with Jason Hurd and other IVAW members to see what’s up in Minneapolis for the RNC. When we spoke to him last week, they were at the DNC about to do Operation First Casualty. Independent news sources describe mass arrests in preemptive raids of activists in Minneapolis. Amy Goodman, among those arrested, states that almost 300 people have already been arrested by the end of the first day of the convention.

If you missed last week’s interview with Dr. Russell McCrimmon and Ron Kennedy from the Veterans’ shelter, get it before it’s gone.
Tune in to Veterans’ Voices at 5 pm every Wednesday or stream/podcast here.
