Making Progress: News for a Change, June 16, 2008

June 15, 2008 by onair

We are honored to have in the studio, Dennis Banks, founder of the American Indian Movement, and one of the elders of the Longest Walk 2, which is coming to Asheville. He’ll tell us about the continent-crossing movement of Native Americans that will converge on Washington D.C.

After that: which is worse? Joking about the possibility of all humanity being thrown into a pit of slime and devoured by a vicious Lovecraftian demi-god, or building Condominiums on public-owned park land? Tough call. We are nursing our whiplashed necks after yet another end-run by Stewart Coleman, this time around the County Commissioners. We’ll try to get you up to date on Parkside, we’ll talk about organic, sustainable farming (the farm tour is June 28 and 29:  http://www.mountainfarmtour.org ) and what might really be behind the rising price of oil.

Oh, and we’ll be devoured by a vicious, Lovecraftian demi-god. Ow! Ow!

BREAKING NEWS: Parkside moves ahead despite Council vote.

June 13, 2008 by onair

Parkside developer Stewart Coleman waited approximately 12 hours after City Council voted unanimously to condemn the sale of park land by the County. When the City Planning office opened the next day, he delivered his response: a new Level II application to build on that very park land. The new proposal supposedly does not require more park land for staging, so no need for a County Owners Affidavit, so no public hearing at the County Commission on June 24th. Once again, the public has been shut out, and this proposal is rolling forward at the Staff level. Contact Asheville City Council and let them know how you feel about this. Also, tune in to Making Progress: News for a Change on Monday 7 pm. We’ll tell you the latest.
