Ross Gay on Wordplay

May 26, 2008 by onair

This week Wordplay features Philadelphia-based poet Ross Gay. Ross visited Asheville in February, read at Malaprops (with Patrick Rosal) and Warren Wilson College, and sat down with Wordplay veteran Joanna Cooper, an old friend, for a nice long interview. This week we feature a couple of poems from the Malaprops reading, and much of Joanna’s interview. Joanna herself joined me in the studio to provide some background and context.

For our music, Joanna chose Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s in Need of Love Today” from his Songs in the Key of Life, Vol.1, and Cat Stevens’ “Tea for the Tillerman,” from the album of the same name.

The full show’s available over on the Archive page through next Sunday.

BREAKING NEWS: Making Progress takes the night off

May 26, 2008 by onair

We’ll listen to last week’s broadcast about Parkside, Firestorm Cafe and Books, and the possible coming October Surprise.

Along with thinking about those veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice during wartime, think about those who lose their lives AFTER they return home. Documents show that the Veterans Administration knows that 1000 veterans attempt suicide every single month, but has been suppressing this information.

This local news and public affairs show focuses on underreported information and encourages civic activism. Tune in live 7-8 pm Monday, catch the 1 pm Tuesday rebroadcast, or stream or podcast.

The Importance of Being Silly

May 25, 2008 by onair

On this week’s Your Mom’s Idea we will give our listeners suggestions on how to add silly to their lives.  Studies show that people who giggle and make funny faces tend to live 18 months longer than those who don’t, 20 months if paired with a diet rich in fiber.  Becky is also way excited about all the new music that has come her way- she promises to play at least 5 great songs that you haven’t heard anywhere else.  Listen Monday from 2-4, or all week long in the archive here.  Check us out and add us as a friend on myspace here.

Remembering Utah Phillips

May 25, 2008 by onair

Famed folk singer Utah Phillips passed away in his sleep Friday night. He was anti-war when anti-war wasn’t cool. He wrote songs and performed tirelessly for the labor movement, and inspired others to use direct action to back up their words, on a range of peace and justice issues. He inspired two generations of singer/songwriters including such current artists like Ani DiFranco, who recorded two albums with him, earning a Grammy nomination. WPVM favorite David Rovics remembers Utah Phillips at his blog here.
