THE RENEWAL OF CULTURE with MICHAEL MEADE
Culture no longer protects against growing threats of global terror and societal greed, while Nature becomes increasingly endangered through pollution, holes in the ozone, and the effects of global warming. In this insightful dialogue, storyteller and mythologist Michael Meade, shows that when things seem darkest, it is “mythic sense” that is missing and mythic imagination is needed. He tells us, “Now is the time to find one’s own unique, personal connection to things beyond time and beyond the simplicity of place. The best connection to have when all connections are breaking down is a connection to eternity which is the individual right of each person.”
Michael Meade is a renowned storyteller, drummer, scholar of mythology and student of ritual in traditional cultures. He has the unusual ability to synthesize this material into a persuasive presentation, tapping ancestral sources of wisdom and connecting them to the stories we are living today. He has led retreats for me for more than two decades and brings a wealth of strength, humor, compassion and fearlessness to this work. He is the author of The Water of Life (GreenFire Press 2006), co-editor of The Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart (Harper Perennial 1993), and the CD set, The Ends of Time, the Roots of Eternity: Tales of Myth, Nature, and Culture (Mosiac 2007). David Zirin – The Athletic-Industrial Complex

Sports play a central role in many societies, perhaps nowhere more so than in the United States. From Michael Vick to T. O., to Barry Bonds and A-Rod, athletes are under the microscope. They are multi-millionaire gladiators. Their every dropped ball, at-bat, comment, and gesture are grist for the sports talk mill. There are hours of radio and TV devoted to their triumphs and failures. Every detail is carefully scrutinized. Fans are knowledgeable and are fearless in criticizing players and teams, coaches and managers. It is not unusual to hear indignant calls insisting that so and so is a bum and should be traded or fired for doing a lousy job. Fair enough. It’s curious that politicians are rarely the targets of similar demands for performing poorly.
Dave Zirin, (Zy-rin) winner of Press Action’s Sportswriter of the Year Award, has been called “an icon in the world of progressive sports.” He is both a columnist for SLAM magazine and a regular contributor to the Nation magazine. He is a commentator on Air America radio. He’s the author of “What’s My Name, Fool? Sports and Resistance in the United States.” His latest book is “Welcome to the Terrodome.”
Alternative Radio airs Fridays at 5:00 p.m., Sundays at Noon, and Mondays at 1:00 p.m

Earthtone Soundsystem in Pritchard Park w/ DJs Adam, Josh, Marty and guests
4pm – 9pm / permit secured
For those of you that don’t know…
Earthtone Soundsystem gained notoriety in Atlanta during the mid 90′s for its free outdoor renegade parties in Piedmont Park. Usually on Sunday afternoons, these house music events drew quite a diverse crowd. Folks usually found themselves gathered around the bassbins united for one last session before the weekend is over. Of course, these were not always the most legal of ventures but that sort of added to the fun.
Years later we have grown up, a little anyhow, and we have secured a permit for an outdoor party right here in downtown Asheville. We thought Saturday might work better for folks too. Hope to see you there…
Pritchard Park is located right in the heart of downtown Asheville, wedged between Patton Ave and College St. For more information please visit our website and contact us.
Check out this video from the Spring edition…
Blows Against the Empire host Cecil Bothwell will tell us about last week’s Pack Square Conservancy hearing on the proposed Parkside Condominiums, and then we’ll chat about the upcoming city council primary on October 9th, (and how these two things are related).
Michael Harney, with Western North Carolina AIDS Project, will preview the upcoming 3rd Annual AIDS Walk on October 13, and talk about WNCAP’s education programs, and the culture around AIDS prevention.
On the Weekly Radio Address, President Bush says something that will make you cry.
This local news and public affairs show focuses on underreported information and encourages civic activism. Tune in live 6-7 pm Monday (followed by the radio edition of the Asheville Global Report at 7 pm), catch the 1 pm Tuesday rebroadcast, or stream or podcast.
